Truly Real Bespoke
Words, people, and things all undergo change. The terms "bespoke" and "speak for" have also undergone changes in meaning and context. Swings and roundabouts—despite their cliche—are especially pertinent to the peculiar scenario of "bespoke." Once reserved for those wearing Savile Row suits and a symbol of sophistication and wealth, the word has become commonplace in modern English. Anything may be made "bespoke"; we can now take the commonplace and turn it into the extraordinary, the commonplace into the bourgeois, even if only for a brief period of time.
The term "bespoke" is undoubtedly loaded with connotations and a rich history when it enters the twenty-first century, but due to its attraction, it has been appropriated and taken over by any endeavor that aims to highlight exclusivity, luxury, and individuality. Like too little butter over too much bread, the term has been disseminated too widely, which is the issue. Not only is the term "bespoke" used to describe a wide range of products, but it has also lost significance in its original context.
The term is now used to characterize any gentleman's suit, from ready to wear to tailored to measure and all in between, by any would-be designer, consultant, expert, or so-called tailor. A suit must meet certain requirements in order to be considered authentically customized in the sense of Savile Row. The first step is to select a high-end fabric from a reputable house such as Holland & Sherry, Ariston, or Dormeuil. The next step is to get yourself professionally measured by a tailor to determine your physical attributes, attitude, and vision. No matter how much thorough Goggling is done, someone who loves to thumb through GQ issues or has a propensity for tailoring does not qualify.
True tailors have completed an apprenticeship program. They have spent several years mastering the profession with accuracy and working their way up the ladder of responsibility as a master tailor's understudy. Certain tailors specialize in making jackets, while others cut pants, while yet others just finish suits without ever cutting a pattern. As the suit takes shape, the master cutter will create a pattern or toile that will be built up around you. It's not supposed to be a rapid process, so it's not. You're welcome to participate in this labor of love and live the experience.
Take caution: once you don a genuine custom suit, you become the standard. Going ahead, nothing else will suffice.
